Bathurst Manor is divided by Finch Avenue, where North of Finch is occupied by G-Ross Lord Park and the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies. The south is mainly a residential vicinity.

Community Overview

Bathurst Manor runs from Dufferin Street on the East to Steeles Avenue on the North. The East border follows the meandering course of the West Don River down to the community's south border Sheppard Street. A sizeable Jewish population revolves around this neighborhood's many Jewish cultural and learning centers and synagogues.

1. Housing:

The residential real estate is concentrated south of Finch Avenue, where single detached bungalows, split-level, and 2-story homes are prevalent. Most of these homes are situated on suburban lots with an average of fifty to sixty-foot frontages. Along Sheppard Avenue, several mid-rise apartment buildings and condo townhouses also exist. This part of North York witnesses about a third of housing completed before 1960, and another 37% was constructed between 1961 and 1980. Roughly 46% of the population in Bathurst Manor are tenants.

2. Demographic:

About 60% of the residents are of European Origin and 21% are of East and Southeast Asia origin. Bathurst Manor is home to a sizeable Jewish community, and several synagogue congregations are here. The neighborhood along Bathurst is known for its Russian populace, with a large Russian Jewish population. The area is also sometimes referred to as Little Moscow. Filipino, the most significant visible minority, scatters across the community. Other ethnic groups include Italian, Polish, Chinese, and Ukraine.

3. Transportation:

Around 39% of residents travel by public transit, slightly higher than Toronto's average. Sheppard West subway station is located at the southwest corner of the community, which connects the central transit system to downtown Toronto. There are also around 10 bus lines going to many destinations operating through the neighborhood. For car commuters, it is also straightforward to drive onto Allen Road, which is at the west border of the community and links to highway 401.

4. Recreation:

Forming a portion of the Don Valley ravine system, G Ross Lord Park and West Don Parklands have some of the most beautiful scenery in North York. Both Parks present four walking trails, such as Hidden Trail, Finch Corridor Recreation Trail, G Ross Park Loop, and West Don Parkland Path, with walking distances ranging from 2.9km to 18.2km. These parks also offer several soccer fields, kids' playgrounds, and a dog park. Irving W. Chapley Community Centre and Wilmington Park are the center point of the community, which feature an outdoor pool, a tot's play area, an outdoor ice rink, tennis courts, and a baseball diamond. Residents can also enjoy the state-of-the-art facilities offered by Posserman Jewish Community Center, located at the community's northeast point. The community is open to the public and includes indoor/outdoor saltwater swimming pools, indoor/outdoor basketball courts and running tracks, an indoor theater, outdoor kids' playgrounds, and a fitness center.

5. Shopping:

Near Dufferin Street and Steels Avenue in the York University Heights community is RioCan Marketplace. Besides some prominent national retail chains, such as Real Canadian Superstore and The Home Depot, residents can find an LCBO, Dollarama, several apparel stores, restaurants, banks, and service stores here. Anchored by the Metro supermarket, Sheppard Plaza is another major strip mall located at the junction of Sheppard Avenue and Bathurst Street. At Finch Avenue, west of Dufferin Street, lies another shopping plaza. Besides many automobile service stores, including Canadian Tire Auto Parts stores, a Yammy supermarket focuses on the complete European Food Experience.

6. Schools:

Wilmington Elementary School and Charles H Best Junior Middle School accept students north of Waterloo Avenue from JK to Grade 8. Dublin Heights Elementary and Middle School takes students south of Waterloo Avenue from JK to Grade 8. William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute, located at the Southwest corner of the community, teaches Grades 9-12 and ranks top 27 over 739 high schools in Ontario. The school offers MaCs and gifted courses. MaCS provides an outstanding learning opportunity for talented students passionate about Math, Science, and Computers.

Located in the northern portions of the community, the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies is a graduate study and advanced research institute for aeronautics, aerospace engineering, and robotics. This institute forms part of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto.

Another post-secondary institution is York University. Its main Toronto Campus is just a few bus stops from Bathurst Manor. Several buses operating on Steeles Avenue bring passengers straight to the campus.
